How much does it cost to study in the UK?

The UK is one of the most popular destinations for an international student. There has been a steady increase in the number of students going to the UK from India to pursue their higher education. According to the latest reports, in the last three to four years, the UK has witnessed a marginal increase in the cost of living.

For international students looking to pursue their higher education in the UK, the cost of studying they incur are made up of, the tuition fees, accommodation, utilities, leisure, and other essential student expenses.

The tuition fees for studying in the UK is dependent on the level of study, the specialization, and the university. Post-graduate programs in the UK could range anywhere between £11,000 to £30,000. For under-graduate programs the UK tuition fees vary from £11,000 up to £50,000 per year, with programs in medicine typically commanding the highest fee. Post-graduate courses tend to be more expensive than under-graduate programs when compared on annual fees. Accommodation costs in the UK would range based on multiple factors such as the locality, the type of accommodation, whether it is on-campus accommodation or off-campus, whether it is a single occupancy or it is a shared accommodation. According to the latest survey reports student accommodation costs could range from £120 to £180 per week for international students. The on-campus accommodation is in a lot of demand, but it is exceedingly difficult to get at times because of the sheer demand. Students need to apply for student accommodation well in advance to avail it and not leave it for the last moment.

Utilities and other Essential Costs

Apart from rent, in an off-campus accommodation, students will have to pay other expenses such as bills for electricity, water and gas. Students should budget approximately £50-£60 for such expenses. Broadband internet connections are available for £15-£30 per month depending on the plan you opt for, in shared accommodations, these costs are typically split among the tenants.

For mobile phones, students can use their existing phones or get one from any service provider with a bundled calling plan. Mobile phone bills/ plans can range from £10 to £90 depending on the plan that students opt for. Bundled plans that come with a mobile phone would be more expensive than a regular mobile calling plan.

For travelling students can opt for a student travel card for buses, trams, tubes etc. These cards offer discounted fares for students. Students can also opt for a pay as you go option, the total costs would vary from student depending on their route and frequency.

According to the latest surveys the average weekly grocery bills for students can be anywhere between £50 - £70 depending on preferences. These costs would be lower for students who stay in catered halls of residence. When eating out in a restaurant, students can expect to pay anywhere between £10 to £30, students can also avail of student’s discounts that are offered at some restaurants, cinemas, or shops.

Students who wish to avail a gym membership can expect around £50 as fees, most gyms also have student discounts on memberships.

Students who opt to study in the UK also have different kinds of financial aids in the form of scholarships and student loans. There are students who avail of part-time jobs to fund some of their expenses, students can work for 20 hours a week while studying in the UK.
