Large number of International students from around the world aspire to study in United States. Earlier, US was considered a key destination for pursuing post-graduation qualifications. However, with the world becoming borderless and communication seamless, students are also looking to study in USA after grade 12. International students from many countries today look for higher education options in US right after high school.
What is required for admission to university in the US?
For international students, most colleges and universities in the United States will require students applying for admission to take one or more standardized tests. They act as a standard measure for comparing students from across the world who come from diverse academic backgrounds .The test results or the Scores form an essential requirement for applications . These scores are sent along with the application with SOPs, LORs , Marksheets etc. for admission to US colleges & universities as part of the application process.
As an international student aspiring for higher education in the US, it is important to be on top of the exams required for studying in the US. The minimum scores required in these standardised tests and the corresponding skills may vary across the course programs, fields or departments. These are broadly of two types of standardized test ; ELP or English Language proficiency exam or Test preparation.
Standardised tests required for studies
For undergraduate admissions, the following standardized tests are required:
- Scholastic Assessment Test: Some colleges may require SAT subject tests-SAT
- Test of English as a Foreign language is a standardised test commonly known as TOEFL
- American College testing -ACT
Post graduate admissions require tests such as GRE / GMAT depending on the professional course.
For students aspiring to study abroad, it is important to know that different Institutions may also look at separate measures on English proficiency tests such as grammar, listening, critical reading, speaking and writing. Some departments might consider it crucial to have high scores in listening and speaking; others might feel it is important to have high scores in reading and writing or critical reading and writing.
For English Language proficiency, TOEFL/IELTS is a requirement for studying in the US. The eligibility criteria may vary depending on the course and institution.
