Stay back options for students in Italy
International (non-EU/EEA) students studying or aspiring to study in Italy have the option to stay back post the completion of their studies for up to 12 months. International students studying a course in Italy on student visa may be able to apply for permesso di attesa occupazione, which translates into ‘temporary stay permit’. This work permit allows the international students at Italian higher education institutions to live in Italy legally post the completion of their studies and search for jobs around the country for a maximum period of 12 months. This one-year student visa extension works as a work permit for international students who wish to take up full-time or part-time employment in Italy after successfully completing a master’s degree or a PhD.
According to the official website of the Italian Immigration department, an international (non-EU/EEA) student, who has successfully completed the doctoral or master’s degree or the three-year university degree or the post-graduate degree from an Italian institution of higher education, at the expiry of the residence permit for study reasons, can be registered in the employment lists in Italy for a period not over twelve months, and can request the conversion of the residence permit for study into a residence permit for awaiting employment. This resident/work permit enables international students coming from across the world to stay in Italy and gain vital work experience in Italy for a period of up to 12 months or 1 year. Moreover, in addition to the part-time work permit for 20 hours per week, the international students seeking full-time employment in Italy post the completion of their studies on the Italian study visa can do for 40 hours per week for 12 months and then consider further extension based on the employment status.
