Italy has roughly a total population of 60.2 million with a highly uneven population distribution.

The population in Italy nearly doubled during the 20th century. As per the Italian government, there were almost 5,039,637 foreign nationals residing in Italy as of January 2020.

Until the 1970s, there was a high birth rate and low mortality rate, after which it started to decline which led to rapid population aging. At the end of the first decade of the 21st century, 1 in 5 Italians was more than 65 years old. However, as a result of the massive migration in the last two decades, Italy has experienced growth in birth rates. The total fertility rate has also climbed too

The major ethnic group in Italy is the Native Italian, which comprises more than 90% of the population of Italy. The rest of the population includes ethnic groups like Romanians, Ukrainians and other Europeans along with several other minorities.

The official language of Italy is Italian. In some of the areas people also speak in French, German and Slovene. With the Vatican City in the heart of Rome, the dominant religion in Italy is Roman Catholic.
