When you are through with the application process and verification of your eligibility requirement to study in Italy, you need to apply for a student visa. If you plan to go for a short-term course or language course, you have to apply for type C visa which expires after 90 days. For a longer duration, you need to apply for a national visa – D type at least three months before your arrival in Italy. As a non - European Union citizen, your visa type will be a student Schengen Visa. The processing time of the application might take between 1 – 3 weeks. In the meanwhile, you must schedule a visa interview around four to six weeks in advance with the consulate general.
In order to obtain an Italian visa for study purposes, make sure you have the following documents ready to be submitted at the Italian Embassy:
- Italy visa application form
- Valid passport
- Recent passport size photograph
- Proof of accommodation
- Proof of financial means enough to support your studies
- Health insurance
- Acceptance letter from the University you’ll be studying at
- Travel insurance
- Copy of certificate from previous education institute
The requirements will vary depending on your home country. If you’re a citizen of the United States, you can enter Italy or any other country in Schengen area without a visa. Your passport though must be valid for at least 3 months after your return to the US. This holds true only if your purpose is tourism or business. For long term study, you’ll be required to apply for a study visa.
In order to work in Italy as a foreign student, you will be required to apply for a work permit. For this, you will need to submit a signed employment contract at a local immigration office in Italy.
As a non-EU national, if you plan to stay in Italy for more than 3 months, you are required to apply for residence permit i.e. permesso di soggiorno. Following is a list of required documents which you must provide at any post office within 8 days of arrival:
- Four recent passport size photos, copy of – passport, health insurance, national study visa, and a statement mentioning the studies you will undertake while in Italy.
