Exams required studying in the US
For international students, most colleges and universities in the United States will require that both undergraduate and graduate students applying for admission take one or more standardized tests. They are intended to provide a common measure for comparing the abilities of students who come from a variety of educational backgrounds and institutions. Scores from these tests are sent along with the application packets, along with essays, LORs, SOPs, transcripts required as part of the application process for admission to US colleges and universities.
As an international student aspiring for higher education in the US, it is important to be on top of the exams required for studying in the US. The level of scores and skills required in these standardized tests may vary by field or department.
For students aspiring to study abroad, it is important to know that different Institutions may also look at separate measures on English proficiency tests such as grammar, listening, critical reading, speaking and writing. Some departments might consider it crucial to have high scores in listening and speaking; others might feel it is important to have high scores in reading and writing or critical reading and writing.
These are broadly of two types standardized test ELP or English Language proficiency exam or Test preparation.
For undergraduate admissions, the following standardized tests are required
- SAT – Scholastic Assessment Test: Some colleges may require SAT subject tests
- TOEFL- Test of English as a foreign language
- ACT – American college testing
For graduate and professional admissions, required tests usually include:
- Test of English as a Foreign Language(TOEFL)
- Graduate Record Examinations (GRE)–for liberal arts, science, math
- Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT)– for business schools/study for MBA (Master’s in Business Administration) programs
For English Language proficiency, TOEFL/IELTS is a requirement for studying in the US. Generally, for a postgraduate degree in management, a good GMAT score is required and for technical courses, passing the GRE test might be required. The eligibility criteria may vary depending on the course.
