Getting a good score in the SAT is what every student aspires for. So, what is a good SAT score? Well, accordingly to the College Board, it depends on how well you prepare and the types of colleges you are targeting for admissions. For instance, A perfect SAT score is 1600, which means that you would have to answer every question correctly and up to the expectations of the exam in order to achieve a perfect score of 1600. On the other hand, the minimum score in the SAT is 400. You would have to be utterly under-prepared to achieve a score of only 400 on the SAT. For an average SAT taker in 2018, the aggregate score was 1068. Now, you may be wondering if 1068 out of 1600 would get you in your dream college? This may not be the case. What is a good SAT score, then? Well, that can be ascertained by doing a comparison of your scores. There are two parameters to do so.
One way is to compare your SAT scores with the National Average scores. This will give you an indication about where you stand against the national average SAT scores achieved by other test-takers. However, this method may be misleading for a few SAT takers as national averages fluctuate owing to the different types of SATs taken by students and may not reflect a true average for your state or preferred college of admission. Alternatively, you may find it useful to compare your achieved SAT score with the typical scores required at your target college/institution. This can be done by identifying how well have you scored on your SAT by comparing your score with the average score required for admission at your target college. Moreover, this will also help you compare your score against the typical requirements for specific schools/colleges for merit-based admissions. In this way, you can identify what SAT score is considered ‘good’ for the college that you are targeting for admission.
In absolute terms, out of the maximum score of 1600, students must be able to get a score between 1400 and 1450. However, a score above 1450 is considered good. A score between 1450 and 1500 is considered very good, while a score above 1550 is considered brilliant and should get you into a highly reputable college in the US or Canada, given that you do well on other parameters.
