Eligibility criteria for Germany
The eligibility criteria for international students vary from university to university and course to course in Germany. For undergraduate courses, a minimum percentage of 65-75% is required at the high school level. For an MBA degree, most universities require work experience of up to 2-3 years and GMAT scores. However, on average, the student is expected to submit the following documents at a German university:
- Curriculum Vitae (CV)
- Duly filled application form.
- Academic Records: Marksheet /certificate for standards 10th &12th.
- Transcripts of Record: A Master’s degree in Germany has a duration of 1-2 years for which the required percentage is 70-80% in undergraduate. The student needs to submit their academic transcripts which give the university full details about the courses and modules that the student has studied at the undergraduate level and the grades received.
- English proficiency tests: A student needs to appear for IELTS/TOEFL for seeking admission to universities in Germany. If the course is taught in English and the student is not a native English speaker, he/she will be required to provide IELTS or TOEFL scores. A minimum of 6.5 (with the individual band no less than 6.0) is desirable.
- Motivation letter or Statement of purpose (SOP): Every SOP should be unique as it portrays a picture of a student’s thought process as a person to the admission committee. With a motivation letter, universities expect the student to focus more on how the program to which they are applying relates to the student’s background and future goals.
- Letter of Recommendation (LOR): Most of the universities ask for 2-3 LORs for the admission process. LORs are an assessment of the student’s skill set and knowledge as certified by the teacher or immediate supervisor. Some universities also have a designated format of LORs which they sent directly to the referees via email. In such cases, the referees can submit the LOR’s directly via the link sent to them.
- Financial documents that may be required depending on the University.
- Knowledge of the German Language may be required: Proof of German language proficiency, equivalent to B2/C1 CEFR levels is required for admission in a “Studienkolleg” in Germany. At a later stage, knowledge of the German language further assists the student in getting jobs in Germany.
