International students wanting to study in Australia need a student visa to enter Australia. To obtain a student visa they need to complete a visa application form, pay the visa application fees and appear for a visa interview in some cases.
Student Visa (Subclass 500) is the visa which all the international students are supposed to apply before they enter Australia to commence their studies. All of the visa processing takes place online.
It is mandatory to obtain a letter of Offer confirming or COE (Confirmation of Enrollment), before applying for an Australian student visa. This serves as a proof that a student has been accepted for a course at the desired university. A student might also be required to pay a deposit towards the tuition fees.
Like most of the other popular study destinations, like the USA or the UK, student visa application takes about 4 weeks to process.
As per the Australian student visa requirements, while filling your online student visa application form, you’ll need to give following proofs:
- Duly filled student visa application form
- Visa application fees receipt
- 4 passport-sized photographs
- Copy of passport
- Certificate of Enrollment(COE)
- Proof of sufficient funds
- Medical insurance cover
- English proficiency test results
- Criminal record investigation results
Once the student visa arrives, a student can enter Australia up to 90 days before the commencement of the course in the university. The university should be informed about the accommodation within 7 days of arrival.
If you are in Australia on a student visa, you are eligible to work up to 40 hours per fortnight during course time. The permission to work comes automatically with the student visa but as per the government rules, you cannot start to work until your course starts. The student should not be dependent on part time work to support himself or the family, during their stay in Australia.
